Mobility is the Key

Niedersachsen is a leading centre of mobility in Europe. On land, on the water or in the air — Niedersachsen is at the top with regard to mobility.

Traffic Infrastructure

In a territorial state such as Niedersachsen a competitive transportation infrastructure is the guarantor and backbone for the mobility of people and for the transport of goods to the smallest corner of the country.

The Autobahn network in Niedersachsen covers approx. 1,400 kilometres, the highway network is around 4,700 kilometres long and the state roads together add up to over 8,000 kilometres.

Railways and Public Transport

Moreover, rail-bound transport and local public transport on the road are essential elements in order to ensure the required degree of mobility. In Niedersachsen there are more than 30 non-federally owned railways, one of which also operates cross-border services. Niedersachsen supports and advocates the efforts of the railways to develop independent transport offerings, some of which extend beyond the borders of Niedersachsen. This is to increase the share of transport being done on the rail.

Harbours and Marine Affairs

Niedersachsen has 39 public seaports. The 15 state-owned seaports represent the second largest group of seaports in Germany and have a current real value of above 600 million EUR. At the same time the seaport scenario in Niedersachsen is marked by a distinctive heterogeneity. While in Emden, for example, the Volkswagen’s vehicle shipping business is dominant, Brake specialises in the bulk handling of crop and feeding stuffs; the island supply harbours are mainly engaged in passenger transport.

Air Traffic

In Niedersachsen 147 airports are licensed for civil aviation. This number also comprises airfields and gliderports in addition to large airports.
